This work was made during Barrington’s exhibition “Grandma’s Land,” at Sadie Coles HQ in September 2023. It is part of a major body of work in which the artist returns to his early experience of life growing up in the Caribbean, celebrating its diverse culture and landscape. Barrington uses traditional and non-traditional materials, such as timber and burlap, that speak to the ubiquitous materials used for housing structures in the Caribbean region; mirroring his enduring concern for how different medias can function as a visual tool and exist as a richly layered signifier of cultural and political histories. His yarn paintings suggest the experience of looking at farmland from miles above; the patchwork nature of land in the 21st century that makes our geography our culture, and vice-versa. It is this birds’ eye view that he takes towards his own life and throughout his work which evokes sodade, or the nostalgia of yearning for a home that one can never return to, remixing materials and tropes from his place of birth (Latin American) to his current life (as an artist in London and New York).
