Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato

Brazilian

(1900–1995)

Better known just as “Lorenzato,” Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato was a modernist artist who portrayed the landscape and everyday life in the tropical savanna during the urbanization of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. His singular body of paintings centered on his fastidious observations of the everyday subjects he encountered in his hometown of Belo Horizonte, including land- and townscapes, favelas, and the people he came across in his meandering walks through town. Using a rich palette of self-made pigments to describe his surroundings, Lorenzato’s distinct compositions are characterised by richly textured surfaces that he achieved through the use of brushes, combs, and forks.

Untitled by Lorenzato reflects the artist’s deep engagement with modernist traditions, reinterpreted through his self-taught lens. The work’s thick, swirling brushstrokes and layered impasto evoke the materiality of post-Impressionism, particularly the textural dynamism of Van Gogh, while its simplified forms and earthy palette resonate with mid-20th-century modernist abstraction. By focusing on an ordinary subject, Lorenzato aligns with a tradition of elevating the mundane, transforming everyday motifs into vibrant, tactile experiences. This work underscores his commitment to capturing the rhythm of life through color, texture, and form.
