Casey Reas is a pioneering artist and educator whose work exists at the nexus of art, design, and computational systems. As the co-founder of Processing, the Processing Foundation, as well as the online gallery Feral File, Reas has profoundly shaped the evolution of generative art and creative coding. In his artistic practice, Reas often undertakes long-form projects that pay homage to the modernist aesthetics that laid the groundwork for digital generative art.

A graduate with a Master of Science from MIT, Reas currently serves as a professor in the Department of Design Media Arts at UCLA, where he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of artists working at the intersection of technology and art.

923 EMPTY ROOMS

923 Rooms by Casey Reas is a generative art project commissioned by LACMA that explores the intersection of architecture, abstraction, and technology. The project consists of 923 algorithmically generated architectural spaces, each uniquely composed through procedural systems. It explores themes of simulation and the history of visual representation and abstraction, incorporating his concepts of kinetic art and a “binary plastic language,” while also connecting to the histories of perspective and cubism.

In METASOTO, Reas pays tribute to Jesús Rafael Soto, a Venezuelan Op and kinetic artist known for his use of industrial materials. Soto’s 1964 sculpture, Bois-tiges de fer, features a Masonite board with vertical black lines and thin steel wires that create optical confusion as viewers move past it. Using the viewer’s body to “activate” the art was considered political act by some, as it rejected the traditional view of art as expensive objects to be passively consumed.

Reas reimagines Soto’s work using live code, resulting in a dynamic interplay of static black lines and moving white lines that create an illusion of animation. Each interaction generates a new pattern, inviting viewers to explore their role in activating technology and creating digital experiences.

This series was exhibited on Feral File in November 2022, as part of the Peer to Peer exhibition, curated by Tina Rivers Ryan.

CENTURY is a generative art series from the Art Blocks Curated collection that pays homage to 20th-century art, drawing inspiration from concrete art, color-field painting, and minimalism. Influenced by Ellsworth Kelly’s 1950s works, where paintings were cut and reassembled in various arrangements, CENTURY explores fragmentation and reconstruction in a digital context. Each piece is shaped by a unique transaction hash, allowing viewers to “cut” and “reassemble” the artwork interactively. Best experienced live and at scale, CENTURY invites viewers to engage with its dynamic, ever-evolving landscapes.
