Dmitri Cherniak is a generative NFT artist whose work is characterized by his reliance on and interest in automation. His art balances control and randomness, creating a dialogue between the artist, algorithm, and observer. A native of Toronto, now living in New York City, Cherniak pursued Computer Science and Physiology at McGill University, where he began creating art using algorithms and code. As a software engineer, Cherniak discovered that the creativity necessary to automate solutions to complex engineering problems often went unrecognized, and this realization inspired him to channel his creative energy toward the automation of visual systems.

The Wrapture is a generative edition with unique properties, created by Dmitri Cherniak with Javascript and GLSL. Part social experiment, part community-building exercise, holders of pieces from The Wrapture series were given a set of rules that would ultimately determine their NFT’s rarity and long-term value: If no one moved, listed, or sold any work from The Eternal Pump series for a year after minting, The Wrapture would be capped at 50 editions and they would be free to move their Eternal Pumps without consequence. But if one collector were to “break the rules,” the remainder of the 666 editions of The Wrapture would be released to the public for minting. Ultimately, when the experiment ended on December 17th, 2022, no one had sold or traded and The Wrapture was capped at 50 editions.

The Eternal Pump

“Don't fight it. Just respect it.” The Eternal Pump is a generative art project named after the crypto meme “respect the pump.” Created as a follow-up to a successful curated drop on Art Blocks, it captured the chaotic spirit of the crypto art scene, marked by intense bot activity and speculative frenzy. Despite its immediate sell-out, the experience highlighted a shift in the generative art world, leading the creator to establish a close-knit community of collectors who now gather and interact regularly.

Art Blocks Collection: Curated

Heritage Art Blocks Collection: Curated series 2

“There are an almost infinite number of ways to wrap a string around a set of pegs.” Inspired in part by the exploration of form in Armin Hofmann’s “Graphic Design Manual” published in 1965, Cherniak embarked on a project to create algorithmic art based on string and pegs that he hoped would look organic, even human-made. Using as a foundation an algorithm he has iterated on for years, Cherniak conceptualized Ringers to illustrate the potential for non-curated generative art. On the surface it may seem like a simple concept but prepare to be surprised and delighted at the variety of combinations the algorithm can produce. Each output from Ringers is derived from a unique transaction hash and generated in Javascript in the browser. Feature variations include peg count, sizing, layout, wrap orientation, and a few colorful flourishes for good measure.
