Eugenio Espinoza

Venezuelan

Born 1950

Lives and work in Archer, FL

Eugenio Espinoza is best known for his minimalist and non-figurative paintings that reference grid forms, producing works as a reaction to the dominant tendencies of geometric abstraction and Kinetic art in Venezuela. In 1972, Espinoza first exhibited his cut and folded canvases, including his Impenetrable series at the Ateneo de Caracas. The Impenetrables are considered Espinoza’s most important body of work, consisting of distorted, slashed and drapped paintings of grids, displayed either on the wall or floor. They are a true creative synthesis that reformulates Gego’s structuralist geometry, and Soto’s Penetrables, into Espinoza’s own and memorable contribution to the history of painting.

Many of Espinoza’s original works have been lost, damaged, or destroyed. This work, Untitled, is a reconstruction of an early work that he made in Venezuela. Since Espinoza views these as a work of Conceptual Art, rather than simply a painting, it is a work of art that exists as an idea (like a Sol LeWitt wall drawing for example). Espinoza doesn’t consider the attachment of value to the “original” work in the way that many people attach value to historical artworks.
