Hans-Peter Feldmann
German
(1941–2023)
Hans Peter Feldmann is a German Conceptual artist best known for using artist books, found objects, and appropriated images to reevaluate and recontextualize subject matter. He considers himself an obsessive collector and appropriator rather than an artist. Feldmann intentionally bypasses the rules of the art market and high culture by making unsigned, undated works and limitless editions. He is known as a trickster, but always with a critical slant. For example, in 2010, Feldmann received the Hugo Boss Prize, which included a subsequent exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. After winning this prestigious prize, Feldmann famously cashed his $100,000 award and pinned it in dollar bills to the museum’s walls, raising questions about the value of art.
