Leda Catunda
Brazilian
Born 1961
Lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil
Since the 1980s, Brazilian artist Leda Catunda has developed a body of work which she calls “soft paintings.” Instead of traditional canvas, she often sews together printed fabrics, arranging them in biomorphic or unconventional shapes, using “low art” materials (such as glitter or house paint), and even stuffing the paintings for a “cushion-like” effect. Her works are innately feminine, highlighting biomorphic forms and the systems of power that perpetuate gender hierarchies.
