Luchita Hurtado
Venezuelan
(1920–2020)
Venezualan artist Luchita Hurtado dedicated over 80 years of her life to making art, mostly for herself, as her primary role was as a wife (to other artists) and a mother (to two boys, one whom is also an artist). It was only late in her life, in her 90s, that her work was brought to light and received full recognition from the broader public. As an adult, Hurtado traveled widely, and lived across Mexico, the American Southwest, and Northern California. She maintained a deeply rooted belief in the interconnectedness of all living organisms, leading to a profund exploration of the the self through her paintings. On the body, Hurtado said: “This is all you have really. You’re born without clothes. This is just on loan.”
