Maria A. Guzmán Capron
Italian-Colombian-Peruvian
Born 1981
Lives and works in Oakland, CA
Maria A. Guzmán Capron creates soft sculptures out of found textiles, collaging together patterns and textures to form exuberant figures. Sewn, stuffed, and quilted together, the artist finishes each piece with a mix of acrylic, spray, and latex paints. She often uses vibrant patterns and exaggerates colors and the scale of body parts, creating a mélange of faces, limbs, bodies and accessories. Guzmán Capron moved from Milan to Bogotá at age 14 before relocating to the Bay Area at 16, where she has lived ever since. “I’ve always felt foreign in every context,” said the artist, “my work centers around creating a sense of belonging. It’s a process of making a home for myself.”
