Mira Schendel

Brazilian

(1919–1988)

Mira Schendel was a Brazilian artist whose work explored the intersection of language, philosophy, and poetry. Driven by her fascination with the material and symbolic possibilities of language, she pushed the boundaries of drawing, printing, and sculpture to the limits of communication. Born in Zurich to a Jewish family, Schendel’s early life was marked by displacement and adaptation. After being expelled from Italy in 1939, she lived in several countries before immigrating to Brazil in 1949. This experience of navigating multiple languages and cultures profoundly influenced her work, as she became acutely aware of the barriers language can create while simultaneously celebrating its capacity for reinvention.
