Rafaël Rozendaal
Brazilian-Dutch
Born 1980
Lives and works in New York, NY
Rafaël Rozendaal is a digital artist and one of the best-known players in the digital art world. Having pioneered the creation of websites-as-art-objects since 2001, his work takes shape through a range of transformations — from movement into abstraction, from virtual into physical space, and from website to print — with all of them informing each other. Rozendaal develops his ideas from drawings and sketches, then translated and distributed through programming and coding. In his NFT projects, Rozendaal often combines visual motifs and themes from recent art history with code and the blockchain to create vibrant, ever changing dynamic artworks that speak to the broad context of contemporary abstract art. Rozendaal’s work is part of the permanent collections of museums such as the Whitney and the Stedelijk in Amsterdam.
Retina
Retina, a unique work by Rafael Rozendaal, references a 1960 painting by the French artist François Morellet, which is in the collection of MOMA. Morellet was a cofounder of the Paris-based Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV), a group of artists active in the 1960s who used geometry and mathematical progressions in their art, also allowing for chance operations. In many respects, the GRAV artists are the precursors to digital artists, internet artists, and thus, NFTs. Retina is therefore an homage to this great movement.

Polychrome Music
Art Blocks Collection: Curated
Heritage Art Blocks Collection: Curated series 8
Polychrome Music is an audio-visual collaboration between Rozendaal and the musician and DJ, Danny Wolfers (known as Legowelt). The series features a generative music system with three synthesizers, each producing an infinite composition through randomly selected patterns from a pool of 180. These patterns, written in the C# Dorian scale, create harmoniously fitting musical timbres reminiscent of early computer sound chips, complementing Rozendaal’s colorful visual work.
