Sarah Ridgley is a digital artist whose work focuses on reflecting the human hand in collaboration with the computer. She often uses themes from the natural world along with geometric abstraction. Self-taught in programming, she uses JavaScript and p5.js — a JavaScript library that simplifies coding for visual arts — to create algorithmic brushes that shape her pieces. Describing her process as “highly-ordered chaos,” Sarah writes precise code instructions but incorporates random parameters, allowing the computer to generate infinite variations of her designs.

Created for Bright Moments Paris, Figs. is a generative series in which digital fruit and layered text evoke sensory experiences, revealing and concealing meanings through the interplay of words and symbols. Fruit emojis are used in this work to symbolize all emojis and their role in adding emotional and nuanced detail to written communication.
